报告题目：The environmental role of tropical forage legumes
主讲人：Rainer Schultze-Kraft, CIAT Emeritus Scientist, Cali, Colombia
Livestock production in the tropics, particularly when based on pastures, is frequently blamed for affecting the environment, allegedly contributing to: (1) degradation and destruction of ecosystems, including degradation and loss of soil, water and biodiversity; and (2) climate change (global warming).
In this paper it is argued that, on the contrary, tropical legumes have the potential to positively impact on the environment, mainly due to the key attributes that are characteristic for the Leguminosae (Fabaceae) family: (1) biological nitrogen fixation; (2) high nutritive value; (3) deep-reaching tap-root system; (4) wide taxonomic and genetic diversity; and (5) the presence of particular chemical compounds.
In conclusion, it is suggested that legumes have a significant potential to contribute to what nowadays is called ‘sustainable intensification’ of livestock production in the tropics along with the provision of ecosystem services, mainly in view of the expected implications of climate change. To further assess and realize this potential, research in a range of areas is indicated.
Professor Rainer Schultze-Kraft is a German agronomist who specialized in tropical pastures and forages from 1970 on. During 1973?1976 he conducted his PhD research at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Cali, Colombia, and Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany, and worked from 1976 until 1991 inthe then CIAT Tropical Pastures Program. In 1991 he was appointed Professor for Pastures and Forages in the Tropics and Subtropics at theUniversityofHohenheim,Stuttgart,Germany, where he worked until retirement in 2007.
At CIAT, Professor Schultze-Kraft established the center’s collection of tropical forage genetic resources adapted to acid, low-fertility soils, mainly legumes and mainly via collecting expeditions that he conducted, in collaboration with national partner institutions, in tropicalAmerica, Africa andSoutheast Asia. Besides his plant introduction work, he was involved in evaluation of forage germplasm as well as activities within two international networks for the evaluation of tropical pastures and forages, RIEPT (tropicalAmerica) and RABAOC/WECAFNET (West andCentral Africa).
At theUniversityofHohenheim, besides postgraduate-teaching he led a number of research projects in the area of tropical forages and biodiversity, mainly via MSc and PhD students, in tropicalAmerica, Africa andSoutheast Asia.
Professor Schultze-Kraft is (co)author of >250 scientific publications. In 1997 he received the award of a Fellow of the Tropical Grassland Society of Australia. Since his retirement from theUniversityofHohenheimhe has been an advisor to the CIAT Tropical Forages Program, after 2009 as a CIAT Emeritus Scientist. He is Joint-Editor of the open access online journal Tropical Grasslands-ForrajesTropicales (www.tropicalgrasslands.info/).
